I loved the movie “Dead Poet’s Society“, not only because of the content focusing on poetry and writing, but because of the main character … a teacher that influenced students to not fear writing what is inside them, or what they observe. I am influenced by that movie and how it made me wish that I had a teacher like that to influence the vocation decisions I made in my life.
One exercise that a high school English teach pushed into my head has always stuck with me: find a mindset that someone else is in, try to put yourself in it, or at least imagine yourself in it, and write. You can produce some interesting writings when you do that (not to mention some that may get you handed business cards for local mental health doctors), but it is interesting what writings emerge when you put your mind into a fiction situation. Many of my writings come from this basic exercise.
